It's a type problem conflating intelligence with consciousness. Intelligence is what is being simulated, powered by language. Consciousness is closer to pure awareness. The observer of the intelligence, witness to the thoughts, not the thoughts themselves. In my view, consciousness isn't something that can be created or even simulated. I'd point you toward Advaita Vendanta for the most correct model of consciousness.
In my view, it is closer to: Humans = LLM + Consciousness
But I believe it is also true that the average person functions almost entirely from their LLM (quite unconsciously)
Language is itself a powerful technology that sort of bridges the gap between words and consciousness
How can we determine real consciousness from a digital one emulated by an LLM? Chatting with several LLMs they seem very opinionated and driven ;)
