While searching for dup submissions, I found a HN user suggested doing this over 11 years ago (although they seemed to suggest that Google would be doing this to USPS trucks and thus having a private company profit from a government agency):
If the USPS were doing this to democratize access to street view data, allow government DOTs better visibility into problems, allow unrestricted reuse of the data by projects like OSM, and had good privacy assurance, etc then it would seem like a good thing to do. If they're only going to hand over the data to companies like Flock and Palantir, maybe not...
