How to better solve for solar roofs (BIPV: Building-integrated photovoltaics)?

Should they sell this product to another firm that will get it done? Or is there a lower cost, safer, more sustainable product? With a compatible part stream?

They are solved today with existing solutions. Solar shingles will always fail due to thermal limits, as airflow is needed for optimal performance and longevity.

Best solution for a residential setting is a standing seam metal roof with friction mounted racking and panels. 40-50 year lifetime, minimum, with no chances of leaks due to no need for penetration through the decking. Commercial and industrial use cases usually use ballast solutions without roof penetrations.
