As I sit on the easy chair with my phone, a tablet is too cumbersome to hold (I'll look for a stand of sorts) and the computer is out. Otherwise, I have to move to the desk, use the non-Aeron chair, and so on.
Another virtue of the phone is that I am nearsighted and can use the phone without glasses at infinity focus (for me)
Addiction? I am an infovore. No known cure.
Social addiction? I have few friends (when you're old, it's not so much that memory fades, it's that people just forget about you, and don't even reply to mails and messages)
But curated sites like HN (and there are precious few) are a way of connecting and staying informed.
