Right before the time this happened I was already out of the social media so I completely missed out on the move from twitter to fediverse. It was only four years later when I came back and faced a graveyard of all the dead accounts I was following, announcing their departure.

Now reading on what happened in the fediverse, my first guess is that they weren't people, they were the offensive team of the competing social platforms. It is a theory but it feels like your hosting platform attacking your website to sell you a firewall. There's always incentive in malicious behavior, it's not just that they were being a dick.
