    I know this doesn't address the point of the article, but the "good soap" analogy fails for me because I hate the "good soaps" in most high-end hotels. They're too oily. I always use the stuff I brought instead.

    I think what the author is saying is "know your audience and address their desires". I dislike the Apple ecosystem (I guess another case of not liking "the good soap"?), but the people I know who are into it absolutely value the things he talks about here.
