I think it's just a small segment of terminally online people that are still hardcore supporters. Shamelessly killing an American citizen in retaliation for protesting and overtly alienating our long-time allies means it takes a much stronger firehose of rationalizations to keep fooling yourself that these things are about "immigration enforcement" or "national security".
