I have had the same rubber (I can say that, I'm English) for about 10 or 15 years. It is one of those plasticy ones, it is long and thin (quiet at the back there) and slides out of a tube (I won't tell you again) like a thick propelling pencil. Not sure if you can still buy them, but making a rubber that lasts is perfectly possible.
