In 2003 I started a web forum. A year later, the web host went offline with no notice, taking the forum with it. I asked my friend who used to hang out on IRC a lot who would be a good web host to use. The recommendation was Lomag.net. I've been with them ever since. It has been smooth sailing for decades now.

The other day I was reading an HN article where some were reminiscing in the comments about old school web hosts, back in the day when you could just upload some files to a server and have a web site. It sort of seems like the newest generation doesn't realize you can still do this. $50 a month + $21/year for a domain name gets you root on a virtual Linux server that you can host and do whatever you like on.

Don't be scared away from hosting your own email server; I've been doing it for years and spam isn't an issue for me. But then again I'm very careful what I sign up for and who I give my email address(es) to.
