This happens whenever the government releases files regarding anything controversial (JFK assassination, aliens, MLK assassination, etc). They have to catalog anything they receive including obviously fake information sent to them by crazy people (see email that had the video attached: https://www.justice.gov/epstein/files/DataSet%208/EFTA000299... ). Then someone sees the fake video that looks completely different from Epstein's actual cell on a .gov website, goes "woah guys did they just release video of Epstein killing himself?????" and everybody freaks out.

It seems to be the case here. I cannot edit it or remove it, probably HN mods took ownership for them to decide what to do with it, especially given the provocative nature of the listing.

I edited the title at one point to add a question mark to the end - this is a standard moderation device when commenters start questioning whether a story is accurate. That had the side effect of preventing you from editing it, though this wasn't my intention.

Thank you, that is very helpful. I've added [updated] to the title and pinned this subthread so readers will see your explanation and dvrp's reply.

The video was found by doing some work for Jmail.world (see also https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=46339600) and realizing that there's an unreleased volume.

    > WAIT we think this might not be a real video

    > a reverse image search shows that 4chan and youtube had similar videos 5 years ago

    > we also found a .pdf with the investigators mentioning a fake video: https://www.justice.gov/epstein/files/DataSet%208/EFTA000299...

    Original post:

    > Warning: extremely disturbing. The DOJ uploaded a 12 second video showing what appears to be Epstein attempting to kill himself. The camera timestamp is the day his body was discovered.

    > The DOJ quietly released the footage, but didn't link to the video yet from their main Epstein Files page. https://www.justice.gov/epstein/files/DataSet%208/EFTA000299...

    I thought the "cameras malfunctioned"?

That video has so few pixels and so few frames, there is no way to say who that is or what they are doing or if the video is even real.

  • dvrp 2 hours ago

We're now fact-checking the video to verify how real it is. All we know is that it's part of the Volume 8 of the dataset from the DOJ and what we know for sure is that it was uploaded to justice.gov

EDIT: We think this might be a fake video. There's mentions of a fake video from Google Drive (now deleted) in a PDF hosted at DOJ site: https://www.justice.gov/epstein/files/DataSet%208/EFTA000299...

Why deleted ? The link in the pdf is fine, it's not deleted.

I don't think I should post the link here because it is death related, but I just quickly type the URL and it works fine.
